- Abstract
- en_US Much about this book will remain a mystery to me, I suspect. It seems to be a collection of twenty-five fables in Catalan verse. A first surprise to me is that it has both an imprimatur and a nihil obstat. Generally, fable books do not need religious permission in order to be published. I recognize only one fable that seems to come straight out of the tradition: MSA on 13-15, here El dir de la gent. Like most of the fables, this one receives four panels of illustration. These occur almost always in groups of 1 and then 3. Other fables seem easy to decipher from their pictures. In the first, a goat sees a goat in a mirror and rushes to butt him. The outcome is easy to predict, and is nicely pictured here. The panels exhibit quite different styles of illustration. The moralitat for each fable is clearly separated and thus highlighted at the end of the fable.
