- Abstract
- en_US Here is a curious book. Bodemann lists a first Bewick illustration of Gay published by Rivington et al in London in 1779 and reproduced in 1792 (#166.1). The catalogue goes on to describe a second Bewick illustration of Gay, published by Wilson & Spence in 1806 (#166.2). That description matches this book, except that the page size there seems slightly larger than the page size here. Thus we may have here an earlier printing of the book that Bodemann's associates found in only a later printing. The catalogue description mentions specifically the movement here to make the portion outside Bewick's ovals into fine ornaments that make the ensemble into a rectangle. This method contrasts with the simple lined rectangle that Bewick seems to have used earlier. The best and most typical of the illustrations here might be The Goat Without a Beard (73); The Man, the Cat, the Dog, and the Fly (197); and The Ravens, Sexton, and Earthworm (246). What a nice little treasure, still in good condition!
