- Abstract
- en_US The illustrations, the verso of the title-page tells us, first appeared in two calendars for 2005 and 2006, designed by Paria Publishing Company for Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Limited in Guyana. Unfortunately, it is hard to find out who created them. They are full-page, colored, simple, lively cartoon-like representations. Sometimes a part of the lively design will be repeated later in the story. The stories themselves are chatty and often aetiological, like How the Dog got its cold Nose (12). One of these, Capouey and his two Wives (14), describes how the Milky Way was formed as a barrier between two realms in either of which Capouey, the moon, has one wife. Usually a teller and an audience is identified. Perhaps the most striking of the illustrations portrays the old woman dealing with two crabs (19). This image has strong colors and images! The book has a curious habit of capitalizing in its titles only the nouns.
