- Abstract
- en_US Here is a direct descendant of Florian's first edition in 1792. It has been a delight to compare the two books. This little book belongs between Bodemann #179.3 and #179.4. Before I mention the similarities, let me note two differences. One is that the number of fables here has been increased by ten by adding 1, 3, 2, 2, and 2 fables to the five respective books. Secondly, after looking closely at the first two illustrations, I decided that they were done "after" the originals. As I looked at the later illustrations, however, I began to wonder if they were from their original blocks. There are thus five illustrations after a frontispiece portrait of Florian. In an illustration under this oval portrait, is that a swan pulling a hare over the surface of water? The first fable of each book is illustrated here: "La Fable et la Vérité"; "La Mere, l'Enfant et les Sarigues"; "Les Singes et le Léopard"; "Le Savant et le Fermier"; and "Le Berger et le Rossignol." See my comments on the 1792 edition for an understanding of these five fables. This edition includes the epilogue but not "Tobie." There is an AI at the end.
