- Abstract
- en_US Reading this polished (and slightly archaically translated) poem is different from reading earlier Reynard material. It was a pleasure to read Goethe's poem in English while seeing both Eichenberg's and Kaulbach's (1846/57) illustrations. I like both! Among the fables mentioned in the work are these: FK (5.49), The Wolf, the Fox, and the Horse (8 early), The Horse and the Stag (10.130), The Dog and the Ass (10.155), The Fox and the Cat (10.188), WC (10.218), The Wolf's Liver as a Cure from the Fox (10.293), LS (10.360), and The Wolf and the Fox in Buckets (11.101). One of the great lines comes in Book 8, largely given to the Church, when Badger remarks that Reynard is confessing other people's sins!
