- Abstract
- en_US Here is a textbook from the late nineteenth century. It features seventy-one fables with grammatical observations, vocabulary, and sixty pages of notes. Perhaps the most surprising feature of the book is a section titled Exercises offering something very like a translation of fifty of the fables intended for practice in re-translation (187). This exercise forms a third step in teaching a modern language after translating into English and reading or reciting. At least many of the small illustrations accompanying the fables are taken from Randolph Caldecott's larger illustrations, though not from his modern instances.
