Abstract: en_US This is a 252-page novel. I have made it so far through the first fifty pages and enjoyed it. It is after World War II in the Berkshires outside London, and a marriage is not going particularly well. In the first fifty pages, I have formed a good sense of the wife, of the man she loves, and of her husband. I am still waiting to find out who is tortoise and who is hare here. I hope to read on! So far I have not noticed a reference to the Aesopic fable.
