- Abstract
- en_US I am gathering a nice little circle of books on the work of Moshe Wallich that appeared in 1697 in Frankfurt. Here, if I understand correctly, we have two parallel works running in opposite directions. Starting from the modern western place, the book contains German translations of thirty-four fables in some XVI and 98 pages. The source of these translations is then given in the facsimile portion of the book that starts from its other cover. This portion includes the small but fetching illustrations of the 1697 edition. They remind one of Ulrich Boner's Edelstein, but are not quite so craftily done. The language throughout this section is Hebrew. I feel very lucky to have found this book! One shudders to think about what the people who produced it experienced in succeeding years of their lives. I am surprised at the number of simple themes repeated from Aesop. See my 1994 edition from Wayne State for more information on the sources Wallich used in putting together his Kuhbuch. Apparently not in Bodemann.
