- Abstract
- en_US Originally copyrighted by Nord-Süd Verlag in 1972. This revised edition first published in Great Britain in 1983 by Andersen Press Ltd. The back cover speaks of this revised edition of one of Ralph Steadman's early children's books, a timely and wry fable. Two boys, each with a donkey, meet each other at the large river that has separated their peoples for a long time. The two conceive the idea of building a bridge, and their respective villages take up the idea vigorously. After the bridge is built and separated, a quarrel arises, and now the bridge is covered in barbed wire. The two boys meet elsewhere along the river and maintain a good relationship. They promise, when they grow up, to tear away the barbed wire and avoid petty quarrels. Steadman's delightful cartoon style animates the book. Not the worst of his offerings is on the cover: the two donkeys kiss, and there is a big red heart between them.
