- Abstract
- en_US Here are 56 short fables, some in prose and some in rhyming quatrains. I tried a generous sampling and enjoyed them. Among those I especially enjoyed were "Die fabelnde Rabe" (36); "Die gelehrte Ziege" (39); "Die Eselstimme" (52); and "Der Fuchs und die Ente" (69). These strike me as real fables. Do I note a tendency in some to a kind of spiritualizing, for example in "Die Nachtigall" (39), where the sweet-singing bird is asked how she learned to sing and answers that the rose taught her? How can the rose help her both to rejoice and to complain all in one? She answers that the rose was blossoming on the cross. There is a T of C at the beginning and a serious "Nachwort" on the character of fable at the end (73-75). This book has a curiosity. "Cora" is spelled with a "C" on the title-page, but on the cover of the book, the first inside page, and in the author's initials on the final page, 77.
