- Abstract
- en_US The results of hunting for fable books can be fascinating! Here is one of two numbered pamphlets that reach out to two different publications already in the collection. From what I can learn, each of these two is a 1958 reprinting by Marcus of a pamphlet printed in the same format in 1947, mentioning Marcus but printed by Picot. A smaller third version of the each pamphlet came out in 1998 from Edicom Direct. Let me notice differences here from the 1947 printing and then commonalities. The front cover of each mentions Marcus at its top but also near the bottom, where the earlier edition had "Picot." The pages between covers mention Marcus 1947 over and over. The back covers list Marcus' "Argot" publications. The outside back cover mentions Marcus again but has the year 1958. This is again a fragile one-staple pamphlet of 16 pages, 7" x 10⅝". It presents fifteen traditional French fables in slang. This first volume contains some perennial favorites from La Fontaine: TH, GA, WL, OF, FG, and AD. Others here from Florian include "La guenon, le singe et la noix"; "L'aveugle et le paralytique"; and "Le singe et la lanterne magique." The cover cartoon reminds one of Rabier. What I found first was the smaller 1998 edition. I wrote then "Maybe someday I can find an earlier and larger copy of this volume!" Now I have found two!
