- Abstract
- en_US The creativity and charm of the abundant artistry in this 232-page paperback raise it well above the common level! I could go on at length about the engaging illustrations. Here I will mention several early examples. The first story, TH, has one of the infrequent full-page illustrations (3). The second story, BW, has three strong illustrations: the loafing shepherd boy, the feet of the hurrying townsfolk, and a dead sheep lying on a hillside (5-7). SW (12-13) has two contrasting illustrations, the second showing the traveler bundled up in a snowstorm. "The Countryman and the Snake" has three excellent images, including a curious human looking off toward something in the snow (64-66). "The Gardener and the Bear" has five strong images, the last of them the bear wielding a rock that is a quarter of his own size (71-75). That bear is also on the front cover with the bothersome fly. MSA grace the back cover. The only English I can find here are the "Aesop's Fables" on the cover and title-page and the web links, which seem not to work. There is a T of C at the beginning, before the page numbers begin.
