- Abstract
- en_US This is one of three books in a series. I have "a treasured collection" but need to find "a precious collection." Wilco books seem to be consistent in using very heavy paper. A second surprise in this volume is that it starts the first story, "Four Oxen and the Lion," without bothering to offer a title-page for the book. The illustrations are quintessential computer generated "comics." The back cover and back dust-jacket list the twelve fables here. Each story is 16 pages long. In "Hercules and the Wagoner," the problem is that the road becomes "slushy." In GA, the cricket stays with the ant and they have a lot of fun together. "Work while you work, play while you play." "The Donkey That Talked" features a Gypsy woman. This fable is new to me. The surly miller buys the gypsy woman's talking donkey and uses him to carry grain to the miller, where the donkey repeats the baker's line "The miller cheats." The baker learns his lesson and becomes nice. Strangely enough, "The Fox and the Goat" gets repeated as stories #9 and #10. "The Fox, the Owl and the Crow" gets skipped. FG spends several pages motivating the fox to want grapes.
