- Abstract
- en_US Here is a curious book with a beautiful dust-jacket cover illustration suggesting a woman flying. The spine has yet a third title: "Fables and Parables: Tales of China." The first unusual feature is that the book really is a catalogue of over 500 different stories, each told in a concise paragraph. The second unusual feature is that the book is typewritten. The foreword points out that these fables are culled from modern publications. The Institute of International Studies at Cal Berkeley did the typing. I moved into the book curious to see how many Western fables might found their way into this collection. The answer is: none. A random sampling shows the stories to be charming and fully in the tradition I have come to expect from Chinese fables. There is an extensive AI at the end.
