Abstract

en_US Here is a small (3¼" x 5½") volume containing some 37 of Fénelon's fables, with a T of C at the end of his 199 pages. These are prose fables. I tried two of them that are pictured here. The frontispiece offers an illustration for "Histoire de roi Alfaroute et de Clariphile." The fable itself is on 155-62. Alfaroute is given a magic ring by a fairy and it gives him invisibility and wings to fly anywhere quickly. Clariphile is his lovely and virtuous wife. One day Alfaroute finds her embracing as friend the disguised fairy, and he kills Clariphile, who dies faithful to him in his arms. Alfaroute spends the rest of his days in mourning. Another fable illustrated is "The Dove Punished for Restlessness" (25). This story concerns a dove leading a happy and peaceful life with a companion. He feels the lure of ambition, travels the world, and ends up as a fashionable courier. Suspected of carrying surreptitious messages, he is mortally wounded and wishes he could be back at peace with his friend. Other illustrations occur on the title page and 111. Accounts of some other of Fénelon's fables are found in my comments on two books in the collection that offer English texts. Because he writes prose fables, he receives only a footnote in "The Fabulists French."
