- Abstract
- en_US This looks to me like an edition prepared for advanced students in French secondary education. It offers a stirring variety of examples of fables and they do exemplify the theme "the strange human animal." I presume that the Roman numerals associated with La Fontaine refer to the first three books of his Fables Choisies. Gaillard brings a lovely panoply of fables for comparison and contrast. I enjoyed for example Lessing's answer (26) to La Fontaine's "immoral" FC, which has the cheese poisoned from the start and the immoral fox demanding it as his usual tribute from Jupiter brought to him by an eagle! The fox eats with pleasure and dies. So much for you, flatterers! New to me here is Pierre Gamarra. I enjoy his "La pomme" (117). An apple announces that it is the most beautiful, tender, charming, sweet, and smooth fruit in the world. A worm in its core proclaims "It's true. It's really true!" Raymond Devos has an arresting piece "Mon Chien, c'est Quelqu'un" (123), complete – as are many offerings here – with a black-and-white illustration. I would enjoy teaching this unit! 127 pages. 4¾" x almost 7".
