Abstract

en_US Mit Illustrationen nach Original-Handzeichnungen von Käthe Olshausen-Schönberger. There are three books of fables in this 67-page book. They are listed on the T of C at the end of the book. One of the book's fetching contributions is a sprightly picture on the cover of Diana (?) running with a fox. One does not often see that kind of risque presentation in German literature or polite Society! The frontispiece illustration is wonderful: a mask and wig cover the head and shoulders of an ass (?). Further illustrations show lion and hare (17); "Zeus and the Horse" (18); ape and fox (20); crying wolf and shepherd (21); horse and steer (22); the ostrich (27); ostrich and sparrow (28); Aesop and the ass (33); wolf on his deathbed (36); crow and peacocks (38); ass and lion (39); the guarded lamb (41); This thin book of 106 pages contains, as the T of C at the end shows, forty-two fables, with appendices offering Gellert's statements about himself, Gellert and bibliophiles, and excerpts from literary exercises of Gellert's. The fables are portioned out in their original books. The pictures, which come out quite dark here, include an enlarged medallion of Gellert (frontispiece); "Die Nachtigall und die Lerche" (9); "Der Tanzbär" (13, perhaps the best of the lot); "Damötas und Phyllis" (35); "Der arme Greis" (67); "Die Bauern und der Amtmann" (77); "Die Frau und der Geist" (81); "Hanns Nord" (83); and "Der Held und der Reitknecht" (89). I checked out several fables here that are new to me: "Die zärtliche Frau" (41); "Der zärtliche Mann" (43); and "Der junge Drescher" (59).
