- Abstract
- en_US I enjoyed my first trip into this book. If one knows a little history, it is striking that Vossler writes in Munich in 1919 in the Vorwort (V) "Bei ihm (La Fontaine) kann auch der deutscheste Germane sich Freude und Erholung suchen, ohne eine gallische Virgiftung befuerchten zu muessen." My! The beginning T of C lays out a good plan, born from Vossler's teaching in the "Muenchner Volkshochschule." Six chapters deal with France under Luis XIV; La Fontaine's education; La Fontaine as satirist and humorist; fable-writing before and after La Fontaine; La Fontaine's first fable collection; and the fables of La Fontaine's later period. Appendices treat three particular areas of fables: kingship; "The Coach and the Fly"; and fables about wolves. The final elements include source texts and "some glimpses" of bibliography. This book seems readily available for purchase or reading online. I am glad to have found it!
