- Abstract
- en_US This pamphlet of twelve fables was a New Year's 1968 gift from the publisher. Lessings "Abschied an den Leser" is fun: "If you, my reader have found nothing worthy of thanks from all that fills these pages, at least be bound to me for what I have retained." For this reading, I enjoyed several of his shorter fables. Monkey to fox: name an animal I cannot imitate. Fox back to monkey: name an animal that would choose to imitate you! Bull to stag: when the lion comes, let us stand together. Stag back to bull: why would I fight an animal I can outrun? Bull to stallion: I would never let a boy ride me. Stallion back: what honor could it bring me to throw off a boy?! As always, lively stuff!
