- Abstract
- en_US Well, now, this is something different. The book of 133 pages is meant to get us to smile, to reflect, and even to be scandalized. First come "les gnorles," apparently stories one tells that are a bit saucy and earthy. The first tells of a pet goat whom grandma takes into her bed. Is there a joke in the answer to the question "What about the smell?" "Oh, he'll have to put up with it." Then come "les histoires vraies," like "Les clefs du préfet." Pupils are terrified by the sound of the prefect of discipline approaching, and then he passes by. Long afterwards the author learns that that prefect hated punishing people, and used the rattle of his keys to keep them in order. There follow "Les drolatiques et sentencieuses," like "L'éléphant et le rat." A rat orders an elephant enjoying a bath in the ocean out of the water. Why? "I'll tell you when you get out." The elephant gets out of the water and wants to know the reason. "I wanted to see if it was you that stole my bathing suit." Here we approach fable, I would say! Last come "Les spirituelles," like "Le saint homme et le chat." A cat in a monastery distracts monks praying together. The holy man decides that, during prayer, the cat should be on a leash. The holy man dies, and so does the cat. They get another cat. Twenty years later an erudite monk writes a book saying that it is essential to tie up the cat during prayer -- because it is a way to get to heaven. When the devil cannot overcome holy models, he lets their disciples do it! So is this really a book of fables? And why the very high price for this paperback book? 5½" x 8".
