 - Abstract
 - en_US The three fables in this colorful book are "The Stork and the Turtle"; "The Merman and the Fishermen"; and "The Bear and the Messenger of the Gods." I followed the first fable. Perhaps sustained a bit too long, it pits a far-flying stork against a humble turtle. The stork brags about all sorts of places he has been and disparages the turtle for not traveling. The tide turns as the turtle asks the stork good questions about all sorts of things that he, the turtle, knows. The stork never wondered about those things. The turtle soon introduces the stork to his home with its many books and magazines. The stork learns both some humility and a yen for reading, and the two part friends who respect each other. The art is wonderfully colorful and animated. The final image of the turtle, for example, has each of his spots turn into an uplifting book (16-17). Someone in love with checkmarks has distributed many of them around this book, sometimes adding one per line. Fortunately, the full-page colored illustrations seem to have survived this onslaught!
