- Abstract
- en_US This is a lively reworking of the traditional fable. Its changes are, I think, reflective of our culture. Both country and city are described -- well described -- in terms of their colors. That is a creative approach that will, I believe, appeal to children. Perhaps the biggest change in the story is that, at its end, the two mice agree that both places have beautiful colors. "It's fun to visit other places." There are beautiful colors everywhere. That is a more positive and affirming resolution than this fable usually receives. There are other good touches in this rendition. The transportation to the country is a pickup truck with hay in the back. The ride to the city is in an open convertible. City mouse is female and country mouse male in the illustrations, but the text does not identify genders. The traditional fable starts with an invitation. This version works its way into an invitation to visit by having the country mouse urge the city mouse to move.
