- Abstract
- en_US "A short history of the medieval animal epic" says it well. This 64-page booklet has five sections with strong illustrations taken from the history of the Reynard tradition. These sections cover the genesis of the Reynard tradition; Reynard's successes and his censure; Reynard as personification of Flemish joy; modern adaptations; and finally "The Fox Now." I appreciate particularly the inclusion of three explicit depictions of the castration of the priest by the captured cat. My! The cover illustration, also on 10, sets the tone perfectly for this book's playful presentation. My hat is off to the creators of this little book. They brought me, with help from Google-Translate, to spend some delightful time learning about Reynard!
