- Abstract
- en_US “Mit 16 illuminirten Bildern.” I guess at something like 1845 as a date of publication for this lovely little book. There are here 72 fables, often identified by their author. Familiar names appear: Hagedorn, Lichtwer, Pfeffel, Lessing, Gellert, and Zachariä. This is a rather expensive little book, but probably rightly expensive because of the excellent hand-colored illustrations. Thomas Rezek is right: these are beautifully colored illustrations! The first is the frontispiece, DLS. Unusual in this presentation is that a dog is attacking the "lion." Is that an exasperated owner in the background? According to Gleim's text, the ass at the end "wants to be a lion no more." In "Bedachtsamkeit" (32), little Hänschen is so intent on catching a butterly that he plunges into a ditch. Another great illustration is for a traditional version of "The Goat, Lamb, and Pig" (49). MSA (61) and "Der Affe vor dem Spiegel" (65) are further excellent illustrations. 92 pages. 4" x 6¼".
