- Abstract
- en_US A tramp on his way home from around the world meets a burly poor woman in the forest and begs her for lodging for the night. She finally relents and lets him sleep on her floor. He turns out to be something of a poet. He asks for a pot so that he can make some dinner. As the water is getting hot, he puts in a nail. Then he starts to mention the things that could help the soup. He mentions that it is what the king eats, but always with a tablecloth, and wine, and …. They eat and drink and tell stories and jokes. After coffee and whisky in the morning, she gives him a gold coin. The final endpaper has an "Afterthought": "Perhaps he didn't trick her after all. But he softened her heart. Maybe this was because they did two things human beings have done since the beginning of time -- they shared food and told stories. Long may we continue to do so!"
