- Abstract
- en_US This is one of the most attractive pedagogical helps I have encountered for dealing with fables. The introduction begins wisely with realism about fables. “Slow and steady wins the race? Hardly ever when other humans are involved” (1-2). In the beginning section, I see all sorts of creative, realistic teaching approaches. Then the fables come in 30 different theme-groupings with five stories for each grouping. The first few groups are “Generosity vs. Greed”; “Honesty vs Deceit”; and “Reasonableness vs Impulsiveness.” I am struck by two things. First, I believe that these materials were put together by teachers who actually tried them. Secondly, I admire their sense of mission: “On every school campus in this world, educators know their moral imperative: to develop students’ literacy and citizenship skills” (1). The organization thus has more than a little to do with virtues. I will recommend this book to those working with making our collection accessible to elementary teachers. 8½” x 11”. 185 pages.
