- Abstract
- en_US Samaniego's Fábulas (1781 for the first volume's five books, 1784 for the second volume's four books) contain 157 fables. As the title here indicates, they were originally written for boys educated in the school founded by the Biscayan Society in Vergara. Samaniego was a Guipuzcoan who settled in Vergara. He had prided himself on being the first to create original fables in Castilian, and this claim led to a falling out with his friend Iriarte. Tome II begins with its own title-page at 141. The two volumes are continuously paginated. The T of C for both volumes is at the end. In a curious move, the four books in Volume II are numbered first and second, rather than sixth, seventh, and so on. Samaniego died in 1801. This small copy (about 4 x 6) has some markings around pp. 12-13. At the beginning of the first book of fables here, that seminary has patriotico added to its descriptive titles. I am happy to get such an early edition of Samaniego!
