- Abstract
- en_US The book's alternate title is Choix des Meilleures Fables Françaises. This is a curious little (3¼ x 5¼) book. It presents the fables of some eleven French authors, with a short Notice before each author's section. At the end there is a long list of other French authors whose fables were not chosen for the strict limits of this volume. The eleven presented in the 200 pages here are La Fontaine, Florian, Lamotte, Aubert, Boissard, Richer, Lemonnier, Dorat, Imbert, Guinguené, and Dutramblay. They form a T of C at the book's very back. Perhaps the largest curiosity of the book for me has to do with illustrations. The frontispiece is a full-page, full-body portrait of someone, perhaps Balland? The Monkey and the Dolphin receives part of the title-page itself. After that, illustrations come two to a page on 44 and 93, Balland's opening Avertissement notes that he has some 150 fabulilsts in his library. That notice is preceded by a dedication to Ch. Nodier. Not in Bodemann.
