- Abstract
- en_US This volume is in poor condition. It is also a surprise. I thought I had Cassell's various publications of La Fontaine. This one presents forty-two numbered fables on some 175 pages. Cassell's address at this point is 104 and 106 Fourth Avenue; that may help to establish the parameters of the publication date, which is not indicated in the book's sometimes loose pages. Most of the fables have all three sorts of Doré illustrations: a partial-page line drawing introducing the fable; a full-page presentation of the fable; and a tailpiece. A portrait frontispiece faces the title-page, followed by a T of C, Dedication, and Preface. The full illustration of The Owl and the Mice (157) is set into the elaborate cloth cover. This owl on the cover has eye sockets set into the cloth cover! Alas, the image is almost totally unreadable now. My other La Fontaine publications by Cassell have two volumes or are by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, the firm's name until 1878, when it became Cassell, Petter, Galpin, and Company. That name of the firm changed in 1888 to Cassell Publishing Company; that date gives a terminus post quem for this book.
