Abstract

en_US This is a set of 124 independent titled panels, each presenting a black-and-white cartoon image and a poem with a moralité. These are the stuff of newspaper or magazine cartoons that border on the risque and flirtatious. Not all, from a reading of the first few, are about sex. A wife wants at last to vacation in Switzerland, and the husband has to inform her Point d'argent, point de Suisse (6). I think there are frequent plays on words. Might that be at work in this moralité: Il ne faut pas courir deux lèvres à la fois? That is a famous aphorism found in Balzac. In this case, a man is apparently flirting with two women at once (8). The following cartoon is about a couple that make love only once a month. The woman complains. The man says it is more hygienic. Does she run off to her dear cousin? Où y a de l'hygiène, y a pas de plaisir. I do not understand the unusual word fablichonneries, but I suspect that there is a play on fable combined with some other verbal element. Half leather. Marbled boards. Bound here with La Petite Nèfle by Edmond Deschaumes.
