- Abstract
- en_US This oversized book (11½" x 15½") contains within its stapled wrapper 50 typical "Imagerie Pellerin" broadsides with varying numbers of cartoon panels. The cover/wrapper is curious. It shows a boy with a cap and tie and short pants eating something on a slide of bread while a picnic lies in disarray beneath his feet. A dog licks a cup and a spilled wine bottle pours out its contents. The boy is of course reading an "Images d'Epinal" book of this size, which shows young people at a picnic. In the lower left corner is "No" without an accompanying number! The front cover's printed sheet is pulling loose from the backing cardboard. I include this collection because of the second broadside,"Le Lion Reconnaissant" (No. 487) in 16 panels arranged four by four. In this version of AL, the slave, an African Black, is named Androcles. Once the lion recovers from his thorn wound, the two are together for three years before each is captured. Once freed, the two walk together the streets of Rome. The other selections present a wide of subjects. Fables show up in unexpected places!
