- Abstract
- en_US This book relates directly to another already in the collection, in fact a notable star in the collection. I wrote of the trilingual edition by Wigand for which I presumed a date of 1939 "As Bodemann (#292.1) notes, the illustrations are after Grandville, but more proximately they are reproduced from another version that Wigand did--only in German--in 1837." I believe that this is that earlier edition (Bodemann #288.5) only in German. There are notable curiosities here. For example, the title-page, with its framework of six illustrations, speaks of Lafontaine, not mentioned on the title-page of the trilingual volume, which seems not to mention any authors. The illustrations seem identical throughout both volumes, but the German text here is in verse by an unknown translator, while all three languages have prose in the other edition. Here, the illustrations receive their own pages without printing on the verso, though on paper as thin as the text-paper. Titles also change from one edition to the next. Fable 3 here is titled (both under the illustration and at the head of the verse text) "Der Rabe, der den Adler spielen will" while the trilingual version has "Der Adler und der Rabe." The fables begin in both cases immediately on the page after the title-pages. The illustrations are well rendered. The book ends as abruptly as it starts, though there are mysteries here. The book actually has 102 numbered fables. The last ten or so seem to follow the same pattern -- as they do at the beginning -- but this volume does not present, at least in this place, "Das Leichenbegängniss der Löwen," found on 95 in the trilingual version.
