- Abstract
- en_US Eleven years ago I found a fragile copy of this book. It had lost its frontispiece and had numbers written in heavy black ink on both covers. Now I have found this second copy of the book, which is likewise fragile but has its frontispiece intact. Because of the fragility of both copies, I will keep them both in the collection. As I wrote then, this is a small book (4" x 6") in poor condition. Green cloth covers. The spine has a gold title, a tall figure of Aesop the teacher and a student (?), and "One Hundred Illustrations." The front cover has a floral cornucopia. The spine is crumbling. The early "Contents" is really an AI. The engravings after Bewick are about 2½" x 1½" with the same wavy-line border around each. Each text is followed by a short "Reflection." A cursory check suggests that the texts are not from Croxall. Though this book is published only in NY, the fisherman on 7 is fishing "on the banks of the Thames." Should not "Engravings from Bewick" read "Engravings after Bewick"?
