- Abstract
- en_US Here is an impressive contemporary publication, starting with the ornate embossed cover featuring green, orange and brown major figures like the lion, mouse, hare, crane, fox, and crow. A second impressive feature is the total of 487 stories here, apparently taken chiefly from Dodsley and Bewick. The illustrations, black and white, are from Crane and Rackham. A last strong feature is the reasonable introduction by Ken Mondschein. He points out well that the life of Aesop is helpful for showing what sort of figure people thought Aesop should be, even if it is not factually reliable. Mondschein spends considerable time discussing the presentation of Aesop as African. There is a comprehensive T of C at the beginning of the book. Xxviii + 399 pages. 6¼" x 9¼".
