- Abstract
- en_US Here is a second copy of this large format book typical of René Touret editions, 9½" x 12¼", with a cover of DW strong in orange and brown coloring. This copy came along with a strange relative. This strange relative has the same interior and then a second similar interior, a different cover image, and the surprising number not of 711 but of 712. This copy came along with that. As I prepared to separate it off as an "extra," I noticed how different is the execution of its internal images from our original 711. One can see little shading in the tree supporting the wolf in the first image, whereas the first copy's tree has clearly delineated ridges. It is as though the kitchen's lights are off in this copy but turned on there as the cook prepares to kill the swan. So I am keeping it in the collection. As I wrote then, there are texts with wide margins and four colored pages with blank versoes: WC; "Schoolmaster and Drowning Pupil"; "Cook and Swan"; and DW. The cover illustration may be confusing. Is that dog carrying a bag? I mentioned then that the booklet raises questions. Who might have been the artist here? Is this post WWII or pre-war? There are clues on the back cover: "32 pages No 711" and "Héliogravure Sadag, Bellegarde" and "Editions René Touret Paris - La Chatre." Like other such large pamphlets, the internal title is "Recueil des Fables de La Fontaine" while the cover has "Fables Choisies de La Fontaine.
