- Abstract
- en_US Here is Bodemann #342.2, which is listed right after the first edition first printing of Gustave Doré in Paris by Hachette. This pair of volumes may outweigh everything else in the collection! Each volume weighs about 11½ pounds! Everything about this edition is meant to be "prachtvoll": size, covers, binding, and particularly quality of illustrations. I am immediately impressed by GA, one of my favorite Doré illustrations. This volume makes me think of a Doré fable exhibit, since we have Hachette, Moeser, Cassell, Uitgevers-Maatschappy "Elsevier," and above all the beginning subscription set. There are of course also a number of derivative editions. WL (23) is another favorite. "The Lion and the Gnat" (73) is wonderfully rendered through a sling-shot wielder standing at the top of a valley and assailing a noble horse-rider. Each full-page illustration has a slipsheet. Bodemann mentions that the illustrations are notably dark. While that may be true, I find Doré always and congenitally dark. This is a book to show off! 11 ¼" x 14¾". 310 pages.
