- Abstract
- en_US Edition illustrated with original woodcuts and colored by Louis Bouquet, one of 350 numbered copies on Rives. This curious and lovely book is almost 10" square. Binding cardboard vellum half way back smooth, marbled paper dishes moiré, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, covers preserved, green head. The seller notes tiny pinholes in the very beginning and very end of the volume, but finds it otherwise a good copy. In fact, there are smudges on the first title-page, and slight folds in several of the last pages without text. Still, I have fallen in love with the lovely colored illustrations. They are bold, simple, and strong. My favorites include the sling-shooter in “Les deus Pigeons” and, among the most complex, the opening picture of “La Vieille et les deux Servantes” and the opening picture of “Le Jardinier et son Seigneur.” In fact, that whole fable is delightful. The image following "The Two Pigeons" interprets well that it is about human lovers, male and female. CW leaves plenty of room for enjoying metamorphosis. Not in Bodemann.
