- Abstract
- en_US I found a large 32-page pamphlet in Paris a month ago, published by René Touret in Paris and Chatre and numbered 711. The picture style differed from other Touret work, which is richly represented in our collection. Now I have received a year's worth of orders through Bertrand Cocq, and I see that I ordered two Touret publications, one of which seems to be a duplicate of that 711. This other is 712; it is twice as long -- 64 pages -- and its first half is a duplicate of 711. Its second half is similar in that it has strongly orange full-page illustrations at four places: "Lion and Hunter" (41); "Sick Lion Visited by Fox" (47, also on the front cover); "Monkey and Dolphin" (48); and FC (56). The second half may have existed as a solo publication; many pages have duplicate numbers, like 8 and 40 or 14 and 46. As I mentioned about the shorter 711, this book presents me with questions. Who might have been the artist here? Is this post WWII or pre-war? There are similar clues on the back cover: "64 pages No 712" and "Héliogravure Sadag, Bellegarde" and "Editions René Touret Paris - La Chatre." Like other such large pamphlets, the internal title is "Recueil des Fables de La Fontaine" while the cover has "Fables Choisies de La Fontaine. 9½" x 12¼"
