- Abstract
- en_US Here is the English version of a children's book first done in the same year by NordSüd as "Der Löwe und das Mäuschen." This English-langauge copy was sold for $6.95 by the publisher, for $1.99 by Goodwill, and to me for $3.99 by World of Books. I will use some of my comments on that German edition, first found at Hassbecker's in Heidelberg. Its first unusual characteristic is that the pages feel more like plastic than paper. They are probably great for little people who might want to eat books or eat on them! The English adaptation loses the German's two-time emphasis on the mouse's curiosity and the lion's emphasis on this event providing an exception. One of the best images of this fetching book is that of the mouse's hole, out of which he hears the lion's roaring. For the major actions of this version of the story, there are several other mice watching what this mouse does. There is no attempt in this version to make the lion and mouse companions or even friends beyond these events. But the point has already been made: "Even the smallest can be a very big friend." The label pasted onto the book by American Book Company in Jefferson City, TN, proclaims "Made in U.S.A." The verso of the title-page says that it was printed in China. 7.5" square.
