- Abstract
- en_US Here is a curious find. A large book (9¾" x 12"), it contains 24 stiff pages printed – except for the last – on only one side. That last page, printed on both sides, contains a list of subscribers. The opening page of text is the only page that faces an illustration. Someone has penciled in page numbers totaling 24 that generally do not agree with the printed page numbers. Text pages contain rhyming quatrains. There are ten full-page illustrations. The story is LM, extended significantly. A mother mouse lives with her three children. She reports to them one day that she has encountered a friendly lion. During her account, they hear roaring, and mother mouse rushes to her friend the lion. He urges her to flee. What can she do to help him? Page 16 (pencil; 14 in print) may be the best illustration: the mouse gnaws on one of the ropes holding the lion. She finishes in the nick of time, as they can hear the hunters approaching. Not in Bodemann.
