- Abstract
- en_US I hesitated for a long time as I left this expensive little treasure in my cart at AbeBooks. Now that we have it here, I am delighted to have helped to save a lovely representative of ephemera from 180 years ago. There is a strong frontispiece of FS. The title-page duplicates the front cover except for the abundant decoration there. A curious feature of the title-page is that the acknowledgement of the publisher is pasted over with a new version. I wonder what was involved there. A T of C introduces this little (4¼" x 5¼") volume, showing that each fable receives a left-hand page for its illustration and a right-hand page for its title and text. The inside back cover is also the final page, 95. The illustrations are set inside a repeated frame. I wonder if they are not taken from another publication. The illustrations are good. The text is modified from Croxall; his long applications are much shortened. Is this what one might call a chapbook? It is remarkable that it is so well preserved! Do not miss the larger image of "the best of uncles" on the back cover, echoing the smaller images on the front cover and title-page.
