Abstract

en_US Here is the masterpiece of our collection! This second portfolio contains 49 of Chagall's etchings, with a list of fables at the conclusion of each volume. As in Volume 1, the cover is also an original etching. Limited to 200 copies on vélin de Rives. I fear that listing favorites among the etchings will have me listing almost all. Among the best are: "Old Woman and Two Maids" (56); "Satyr and Traveler" (57); "Bear and Two Travelers" (63); "Young Widow" (72); MM (75); "Cobbler and Financier" (79); "Secret" (80); "Dog with Master's Lunch" (81); "Ass and Lapdog" (86); and "Farmer and Squeaking Pig" (92). Here is the seller's description: " 2 vols. Folio. (398 x 306 mm). Half-title and title to each vol., first vol. half-title with justification verso and the text of La Fontaine's ‘Fables". Illustrated with 100 original monochrome etchings by Marc Chagall, 51 in vol. 1 and 49 in vol. 2, list of 'Fables' at conclusion of each vol. final leaf of vol. 2 with achevé d'imprimer; the illustrations for the covers are also original etchings. Loose as issued in original publisher's wrappers, the wrappers for each vol. with original etchings by Marc Chagall to upper covers, chemise for each vol. and slipcase. The book is complete with all the prints and text. From the edition limited to 200 copies on vélin de Rives (including 15 hors commerce numbered in Roman numerals) signed by the artist on the colophon." What a joy!
