- Abstract
- en_US First of four editions, three in 1958 and one by a different publisher in French in 1973. The three 1958 editions, all published by "Dialogue" in Martinique, are listed as English, French, and "Creoles and Pidgins, French." I take this to be a French edition presenting Creole adaptations. A quick search in Creighton's DSpace turned up "Zayann," to which Lung-Fou was a contributor. Our search engine searched even the pdf of the book's colophon! There are 21 fables, with titles regularly different from La Fontaine's. Thus GA has for its title "Compter assou Can-nari lé zott' ou resté sans souper." Neither Google nor I can work out the first part, but the second seems to be "or remain without supper." Each fable has a black-and-white illustration signed "MTJLF." The illustrations are, in my opinion, engaging, stylized, and dramatic. The cicada plays a drum, not a guitar, while the ant lives inside a shell stacked with cartons (4). Lung-Fou's cat-woman is charming and catlike (10). Her wolf in WL has jagged edges all over (13). The dying farmer holds a rosary in his hand as he speaks to his daughter and two sons about the treasure in the field (22). The fox is female while the stork is a triumphant male in FS (24). TMCM includes much more detail than other illustrations (42). Ox and frog are dressed in human clothes that accent their relative sizes (46). There are two errors in the composition of the publication: pages 15-18 occur between 22 and 23, and pages 31-34 occur between 38 and 39. 49 pages overall. 8¾" x 10½". The binding consists of two staples. The rarity of this publication led me to pay its very high price.
