- Abstract
- en_US This is a curious, fragile book, curious partially in its relationship to a book already in the collection. That 1953 book has the same title but is not a sixth volume. It belongs to the same series, " Neudrucke deutscher Literaturwerke des XVI. Und XVII. Jahrhunderts," but is Nr. 110-117, whereas this earlier book is No. 231-235. This has two editors, including Karl Drescher. Here there are items numbered 831 through 1023, plus some 36 appendixed texts. Their verse schemes seem to be signaled by known hymn names. That helps to make sense of the subtitle "Die Fabeln und Schwänke in den Meistergesängen." I think that I recognize many traditional fables along the way, like "Chanticleer" (page 157); "Lion, Ass, and Fox" (181); 2W (182); "Little Fish and Angler" (183); "Satyr and Pilgrim" (185); 2P (309); and "The Treasure in the Vineyard" (328). As I noted in looking at that later edition, Sachs was born in Nurnberg in 1494 and apprenticed as a shoemaker. He joined the Reformation early. He became a meistersinger and created a wide variety of literature, including some 6000 poetic works
