- Abstract
- en_US Here is yet another Florian edition coming towards the end of a period in which his fables were frequently published. This 1846 copy seems to be a reprinting of Bodemann #300.2, which Lehuby reprinted in 1843 from its original edition in about 1841 (Bodemann #300.1). It thus comes soon after Grandville's Florian in 1842. Others in this cycle are Comynet (1830, 1832); Ledentu (1832); Victor Adam (1838); Langlumé et Peltier (1840); Tastu (1841); and Mame (1841). Consistent with Bodemann's description there are here twenty full-page illustrations for Florian's fables designed by Bouchot and engraved by Trichon, Bertrand, and Pouget. One of them is the frontispiece, apparently on a goldfinch smuggled into a family of canaries. These strong illustrations are done on heavier paper. One lovely feature of this book is the cover picture of "Le Lapin et La Sarcelle" enshrined in an elaborate frame embossed in gold on the black cloth. The spine similarly shows the title, "Lehuby," and a squirrel and a wolf (?). I see this as a lucky find on Ebay!
