Abstract

en_US This little (3½" x 6") book represents a real contribution to the fable collection. I am particularly delighted any time we can include a book that is a "point 1" in Bodemann's catalogue, and this is 127.1. Its 305 pages include a variety of things: Phaedrus, Gudio's appendix to Phaedrus, Avianus, and Seneca's sententiae, with comments particularly on Phaedrus. The illustrations by Fessard at the beginning of the Phaedrus books and Avianus are dated 1747 and deal with particular fables in each book of Phaedrus, like WL (1); "Lion, Cow, Robber, and Traveler" (25); "The Old Woman and the Wine Jug" (36); FG (57); and "The Poet" (82). They are well done here! The continuing pagination suggests that this was a comprehensive volume from its conception, not a collection of stand-alone works. Still, the title-page of Avianus has 1747, while the beginning title page announcing Phaedrus has 1748. The book-opening illustration for Avianus (159) is curious: a ram (or monkey?) shows a theatrical mask to a fox in the presence of many animals. Bodemann features the Fessard frontispiece of Mercury, presumably handing a text to either Aesop or Phaedrus. Very good condition. 305 pages.
