- Abstract
- en_US There is a copy of this fine little book in the collection, but this second copy has one surprising difference that helps to illustrate the book trade -- and a second difference that changes its look on the shelf. The first difference is that the two illustrations are placed differently. That volume had "The Monkey and the Cat" as a frontispiece and the rather suggestive "The Lion in Love" at the beginning of Book VI. Here the latter illustration becomes the frontispiece and the former is buried between 318 and 319 in the midst of Book IX. Apparently, bookbinders exercised some discretion as to where the illustrations accompanying a text would best be placed. The external difference is that this volume is partially bound in leather and has six sections on its leather spine. Otherwise it remains the compact little (3½" x 5" x 1") volume I wrote about there. French Wikipedia reveals that the pen name of Paul Avril was adopted by Édouard-Henri Avril, who died in 1928 and was known for his erotic paintings. Not in Bodemann.
