- Abstract
- en_US This is a large-format (8"x 11½") pamphlet of 32 pages. La Fontaine on the cover spreads his arms out over a painted picture of participants in some of his most beloved fables. The pamphlet looks to me like a rival to the work of Epinal and particularly to the many cheap Belgian pamphlets produced shortly after World War II. The coloring is well done. There are some unusual elements here. TMCM feaures a dancing mouse perched on the arm of a chair. There are faces on many characters in OR, some more subtle than others. In TH the rabbit watches the tortoise go by. In 2P, the two pots hold hands as they walk. CJ is pictured at the jeweler's. GA has one image in which other insects are literally throwing cold water on the singing grasshopper. The last image does a great job with the ant's face and stance at the door to her cottage. A lovely ephemeral find! I have trouble making out the artist's signature: Thilfippi?
