2004 Olympic Games Fable Pins. Athens, 2004. Set of 6 pins.
High quality enamel finish on pins illustrating FC; "Zeus and the Serpent"; "The Stag and the Vine"; TH; FG; and WS. The pins were apparently marketed as a puzzle that spreads out like a fan through about 90 degrees of a circle. I am surprised to learn of these only eighteen years later!
1960 2 sets of eight stamps, each set on two FDC envelopes with a red line-drawing of Puss 'n Boots on the envelope. All are postmarked Budapest, Dec. 1, 1960. Each stamp is marked "Magyar Posta" and "Zombory Éva," and each contains a different denomination in Hungarian Forints: 1, 2, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, and 170. $19.80 from Westminster Stamp Gallery, Ltd., Nov., '04. Click on the image here to see a larger version.
The stamps for 1, 2, 20, and 30 Forints seem to picture fairy tales, like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" on the 30 Forint stamp. Puss 'n Boots is on the 60 Forint stamp. The 40 Forint stamp pictures MSA, as just above. The 80 Forint stamp is a nicely colored presentation of FC. The 170 Forint stamp presents the last phase of FS, with a quiet and reserved fox. The envelopes in one set are marked with only the FDC stamp and the postmark. The envelopes in the other set include other appendages, including "Special Delivery," "Legiposta," and "Via Air Mail."
2001 2 postcards using the stamps of Panchatantra as part of the card itself, one with a photo of a swan and the other with a cartoon of a lion. $10 from Arun Agarwal, Kanpur, India, on eBay, Feb., '
These two postcards are surprising in several ways. First, they are so different from each other. One uses a standard photograph of a swan gliding through placed waters – supposedly to illustrate the efforts of two geese to save a talkative turtle. The other places a cartoon of a lion in a similar photograph of a jungle setting, to set up the stamps' story of a the rabbit who lured a lion into jumping into a well to attack his competitor. The second surprise is that the stamps are not paste onto the card but rather integrated into its picture. Both list the India Post on the obverse and list "Postmas ter General Pune 411 001."
1950? 2 Jeux de Patience: Les Fables de La Fontaine. Paris: Jouets Veza. Two wooden picture puzzles: MM and OF. 25 pieces each. Artist: A. Jourgin. Made in France. Just over 8" square. CLC 2020.0199.1.1. Unknown source.
This is perhaps the sturdiest pair of puzzles in the collection. Complete in the box. Jourgin was doing movie posters in 1937. The only other Jouets Veza product I can find is a set of puzzles displaying propeller drive airplanes and jets at Nice's airport.
1890? 2 cards with full-color images of children acting out La Fontaine's fables within a border advertising B. Baloy, 42, Rue de la Chaussée d'Antin. 3" x just over 4".
The pink and floral border frames each of two scenes familiar already from cards marked by "Dépot Central," namely "Le Loup, la Mère & l'Enfant" and MSA. These cards are thus slightly larger than their "Dépot Central" counterparts. Once again, the color printing is not exact. Baloy is a shoe dealer. The "Le Loup, la Mère & l'Enfant" card shows some old paste scars on both faces, while the MSA card shows them only on the text side.

1997? Russian matryoshka set of 5 dolls Aesop’s Fables.” 5.75” high. Signed perhaps “Aesop’s Fables. 5 Pieces. Sergiev Possa 97. M. Yudin.” Unknown source.
This is another lovely signed Russian matryoshka. The rear halves are uniformly two-tone brown with decorative lines. The coloring is strong, with emphasis on purple. The five pieces, in order, picture FC; GA; “Two Frogs”; TMCM; and WL. A quick look online could find no second copy, though it brought up many other representations of FC.
1995 One three-holed FDC landscape page, almost 8½" x 12", containing the stamps, a colored hologram-like image of La Fontaine with the animals by Odette Baillais, and a good section of prose on La Fontaine. No. 1233 S du catalogue CEF. #2451 of a limited edition. Imprimé par Editions CEF à Nice. Distribué par SO.D.O.P. $29.50 from Alexandre Przopiorski, Lyon, France, April, '99.
The chief interest on this massive page is, I believe, the Ballais' picture putting La Fontaine's head in the midst of various animal figures. I myself find it a difficult picture to read.
1995 6 large envelopes, each featuring in its upper left corner an enlarged representation of one of the series of La Fontaine fable stamps issued on June 24, 1995. The envelope bears that same stamp in the upper right. The envelopes came with five matching cards (see the next entry) bearing the same characteristics; only the FC envelope lacks a matching card. All were sent to members of the Romi family in Lyon or St. Mandé. $15 for the envelopes and cards from Loic Marchat, Villeurbanne, France, through Ebay, Jan., '02.
I was amazed to find that there is yet another incarnation of the designs of this series. As opposed to other items in the collection, this set is not a first day cover; the envelopes were sent at various times. The five with cards were sent from Vincennes, while FC was sent from Lyon. When the French post office does a promotion, it promotes vigorously!
1995 Set of six FDC envelopes featuring a first-day postmark, one (or on the first card, three) of the La Fontaine fable stamps issued on June 24, 1995, and a hologram-like art work surrounded by a gold frame like the outer edges of a stamp. Nice: Éditions Philatélique. $29.50 for the set of six from Alexandre Przopiorski, Lyon, France, April, '99.
The art work here is simpler than the work of Delierre and others on the FDC postcards issued the same day. There is no acknowledgement of the artist. Perhaps the work among these with the most vigor is WL. I presume that Éditions Philatélique in Nice, which published this set, is allied with Carte Philatélique in Paris, which published that set.
1993 2 pairs and one singlet of Alcara Set of 4 La Fontaine Fable Pairs of Characters. 1993p2 dv544 fables de la fontaine dores aff1993 alcara.
To my surprise these charms tend to be listed by the French under "fèves" I am of course eager to find the other three individuals. The group reproduces in metal the form of figures found in a set of fèves that we already possess.
1985? 6 hand-painted animation cells from Filmation for “The Tortoise and the Hare.”
I have searched but not yet found the Filmation cartoon in which these cells were included. There is a researcher’s project for the future! It is sometimes hard to picture how this single “cell” picture would be included in a motion-picture cartoon. If you look closely, you can see the movable overlay on the colored background. There is very nice work with color here!
