Jesuits Subject Guide
This list includes books written about the Society of Jesus, books written about significant Jesuits, and books written by significant Jesuits. Included are works on St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, and several works concerning Father Pere de Smet, a missionary in North America during the nineteenth century.

Amadaei Guimenii Lomarensis… - 1665 [BX3706 .A2M68 1665]
A Latin treatise defending the “lax morals” of the Jesuits. The book was banned and censored in France by the Sorbonne in the year 1665 along with the teachings of the author (Mateo de Moya). In 1666, the ruling was annulled by Pope Alexander VII, though Paris upheld their right to censure the book. In response, the Pope subjected the book to the Inquisition, and it was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. In 1688, Pope Innocent XI condemned the book to be burned.
Our edition was published before the initial Paris censure.

Note: “Satyr” is a misspelling of “Satire,” not a reference to mythological creatures or Jewish customs.
This is an example of political satire during the time of the Popish Plot, an event under the reign of Charles II of England that occurred around 1679 (when these works were first written; 1681 is when they were first compiled).
